Easter time in Cyprus is the important time in the Cypriot religious calender.
In keeping with Cypriot traditions, the female members of the family prepare flaounes and dyed boiled eggs on the Holy Thursday.
Flaounes are a savoury cheese pie (tyropitta) with mint and sometimes raisins
The eggs are hard boiled and dyed either red or yellow.
Also, church icons are covered with black veils or sheets on Holy Thursday. |

Since joining the European Union (EU) in 2004, any EU national is able to live and work in Cyprus. The EU allows for freedom of movement for all citizens of the European Union members.
An EU citizen wishing to work in Cyprus, must register with the Department of the Population and Migration Archive within 8 days of arriving in the country. By doing this the worker is able to work for a period of up to three months.
To be entitled to work more than three months an alternative procedure must be followed. |

When drinking in Cyprus you will be asked whether you want local or imported spirits. Why is this?
It goes back to the pre EU days when imported spirits were over £25 a bottle. Therefore, local spirits were much cheaper - £1.50 a measure, whereas imported was being charged at over £2.50.
With Cyprus joining the EU, imported spirits fell in price to £5 a bottle! So, why do bars still ask whether you want local or imported drinks. The imported drinks are cheaper and better than the local spirits. |

As tourists are walking the streets, they are being stopped and pestered by couples riding along on scooters trying to entice them into a seminar for their timeshare resort. They are promised a gift or even given a couple of scratch cards which one will undoubtedly win, just to get the tourist into their offices for a 'hard' sell. |
